Quick Surfboard Knowledge

Understand the recommendation.

You do not need to become a surfboard designer before choosing your next board. These three ideas explain most of what matters.

01 Size and Volume Litres help, but they are not the whole board.

Volume tells you how much float a surfboard has. More volume generally makes paddling, stability and wave catching easier. Less volume can make a board feel more responsive, but it also demands stronger technique.

Two boards with the same litres can still feel completely different because length, width, outline, rails, rocker and volume distribution also affect how the board performs.

02 Board Categories Different shapes solve different problems.

Soft-tops and larger beginner boards prioritise stability, confidence and wave count. Funboards and mid-lengths offer a balance between easy paddling and improving turns.

Shortboards prioritise speed, control and manoeuvrability, but usually require better positioning, paddling and timing.

03 Surf Progression A smaller board is not always the next step.

Move down in size when you can paddle confidently, catch unbroken waves consistently, control your direction and stay positioned without depending on the board’s extra stability.

Dropping to a smaller board too early often reduces wave count and slows progression. The right board should challenge you without removing the repetition needed to improve.

Useful rule

Choose the board that helps you catch and ride more waves now, while still leaving room for the next stage of your surfing.

Surfboard Volume

Find a sensible starting volume.

Your weight and experience can give you a useful starting range. Board shape, width, waves, fitness and personal preference still matter.

Fast utility, not a full board prescription. Use the litre range as a starting point. The main Surfboard Finder considers more of your surfing profile.
What do you weigh?

Enter 35–160 kg, or the equivalent in pounds.

How would you describe your surfing?

Choose your current level. A generous answer usually produces an unhelpfully low number.

Use volume as a starting point

Length, width, rocker, rails and where the foam sits also affect how a surfboard paddles and turns. Two boards with the same volume may still feel very different in the water.
