Control heat and sunlight
Long exposure to heat can damage surfboard materials and increase pressure inside some boards. Use shade and ventilation, and avoid treating a car as permanent board storage.
Support the board
Use a stable rack or padded surface that spreads the load. Avoid sharp contact points on the deck or rails, and make sure the board cannot fall when another item is moved.
Manage fins and leashes
Remove large fins when storage space is tight or when they may be knocked. Do not leave the leash wrapped tightly around the board for long periods, as it can retain bends and place pressure on the rail.
Check before storing
Rinse when appropriate, allow the board to dry and inspect for damage. A small crack should not be ignored simply because the board will not be used for several weeks.
