What litres measure
Volume gives a useful estimate of how much flotation a board can provide. It helps compare boards that have different dimensions and can be especially useful when moving between board categories.
What volume leaves out
A litre figure does not show where the foam sits. Width through the nose, thickness under the chest, rail shape, rocker and tail area all influence paddling, stability and response. Two boards with equal volume can therefore feel noticeably different.
Why calculators have limits
Volume calculators usually begin with weight and ability, then apply a broad ratio. That can provide a starting range, but it cannot see your paddle fitness, local wave quality, injury history, stance or the exact shape of the board.
How to use volume well
Compare volume alongside the board’s full dimensions and intended use. If you already own a board, record its volume and how it feels in real sessions. That personal reference is more valuable than chasing a number without context.
